HANSEL & GRETEL ARE:
once again in trouble with the good old witch that we all know and love ‘Dee Wallace’... oops! I meant Lilith!. A film by ‘Anthony C. Ferrante’ as he describes the film to be a “low budget wonder” with an overall budget that consist of $135,000 with twelve days to film the feature film, with only ‘Dee Wallace’ on set for five out of the twelve days. ‘Dee Wallace’ was previously connected to director ‘Anthony C. Ferrante’ on his former film he directed ‘Boo’ as she played ‘Nurse Russell’ as he demanded and pleaded how she needed to portray ‘Lilith’ in his feature film ‘Hansel & Gretel’. ‘Dee Wallace’ shocked upon the director and expressed “how she doesn't have the time to work on the film”, eventually ‘Dee Wallace’ gave in and agreed to work on the film to play ‘Lilith’ the hungry witch who is seeking a daughter to rise up on her actions. What I found remarkable hilarious was that, the character ‘Hansel’ was cast the day before shooting, however Brent Lydic auditioned weeks earlier before the development. ‘Anthony C. Ferrante’ stated that film-studio ‘The Asylum’ wanted the real deal and go with a younger audience targeted for ‘Hansel’, but eventually cast another man who was older than Brent truly was. ‘Stephanie Grieco’ who portrays ‘Gretel’ also received the role as ‘Gretel’ only just three days before production started and also expressed that she did not know who her brother was, so she didn't have time to connect with Brent throughout the set.
Jose Prendes (The writer of Hansel & Gretel) explains how film-studio ‘The Asylum’ originally asked the man himself to write the story as he intentionally thought that the story-line was going to resolve around fairy-tale connections , however Jose’s idea was a mixture between ‘Se7en’ and ‘The Lost Boys’, which was the pitch was eventually chosen with a fairy-tale impact, the draft of ‘Hansel & Gretel’ was completed within a day,
then the second draft was finished on the second day, and the final script was developed on the third day. ‘Hansel & Gretel’is perfection to the extreme, it knocks ‘Witch Hunters’ out with a bang, this feature film will keep you mildly entertained throughout the ‘Grim Tale’. I can’t imagine who else would portray the witch in this low-budget wonder, I personally believe that ‘Dee Wallace’ was absolutely fantastic in this film, even if she was on set for five working days.
The reason why I gave this film a 4 out of 5 was mainly because the love and appreciation towards the production added value to the overall film, you can observe that the creators of ‘Hansel & Gretel’ put more than a decent effort into making this film, they’ve structured lots of detail within the film, and that’s what truly made the film magical. I definitely without a doubt recommend this to anyone who loves a good ol’ scary film to watch on a Saturday night. - Trent Browning ★ ★ ★★ / 5
