Based on the video game 'SILENT HILL 3' by Konami, we are back with the latest installment within the 'SILENT HILL' franchise, this may be recognized as a follow on from the 2006 feature self-titled film 'SILENT HILL'. From the follow on events from the 2006 version, The motion picture institutes off with a nightmare sequence (that's interpreted from the video-game itself). which introduces the main star within the film 'HEATHER' (ADELAIDE CLEMENS), who you may recognize the character from the previous installment. Once Heather has awoken from her nightmare, the mighty father (SEAN BEAN) comes for her rescue.
Principal photography for SILENT HILL: REVELATION began in Toronto, Canada on March 7th, 2011 and wrapped in May, 2011 with a total budget of 20 million dollars. Since it did endorse a smaller budget compared to the original film, the production only had a limited time to produce a film in the matter of a few weeks. Which all lead to continuity, financial expectations and a poorly executed film. As one dilemma that didn't seem to make financial sense to me was that the film 'SILENT HILL: REVELATION' had a lack of promotion. Surely, it was produced by Lions Gate Entertainment - but it only had a limited theatrical release within the boundaries of western states. With the major box office success of the first film: you would believe that this motion picture would live up to its expectations as the first film did. However, the film did eventually make a profit of over 30 million in total.
Director 'Michael J. Bassett' stated that he was a re-known fan of the original games and sought to keep the film equivalent to the original games produced by Konami. It's not a direct adaptation from the video games but rather "inspired" as others may recall. The film was as well written by 'Michael J. Bassett' and co-written by 'Laurent Hadida' who was one of the many producers of the production. The writing was described as 'weak', 'cheesy' and also 'poor' by many film critics. As a end result, Michael J. Bassett expressed that he was rather dissatisfied with the final product.
One major aspect that was a disappointment to the overall film was that the motion picture 'SILENT HILL: REVELATION' seemed to have unlikable characters, which is ought a shame because compared to the video games: you have a decent amount of background information on each character. However in the film, you don't get a understanding of certainty from the film, even at times; you may not even remember the characters name. Another point I may add is that the editing that was introduced to the film was poorly executed; the color grading changed from time to times - it didn't tend to match to the overall intensity which the film would've had. The pacing in the film changed depending on the setting, for example; the scene with Heather & Vincent in the school boundaries within the hall way didn't have a sense of actuality that was interpreted in the scene itself, as it came off deprived.
SILENT HILL: REVELATION was an entertaining film to watch if you're not a fan of the video games. The film would've had disturbing elements as it did with the original video game produced by Konami; It's a rather action-packed film that doesn't have any decent knowledge that's referring to its original context. I simply give SILENT HILL: REVELATION a two out of five, mainly because I'm a huge fan of the game and you can't compare the two with each other. You either love the film or you hate it, watch it out of curiosity: it's at least worth a rent.
