"During the 1980’s over 70% of American adults believed in the existence of abusive satanic cults. Another 30% rationalised the lack of evidence due to the government cover-ups. The following story is based on true unexplained events." The House of the Devil is an independent film that was established in 2009 by American filmmaker Ti West. The film opens with college student Samantha Hughes expressing to her landlady that she is interested in moving into a new apartment. The audience quickly realises that she is disgusted by how her sex-addict roommate lives in an unhealthy lifestyle. With only a few dollars in her name, she is in urge for a job to pay for her new apartment. Samantha then comes across a flyer by her college with only a number attached to the advertisement. She is suddenly interested and takes the flyer with her. Upon arrival to the Ulman’s residence, Samantha’s friend Megan insists they leave but Samantha was convinced by the $400 she was offered. Little does Samantha know is that she’s being set up for a satanic ritual.
The House of the Devil pays homage to the 1980’s horror genre. Stylised as a 1980’s splatter film, the film used techniques such as constant slow-paced camera zooms and using 16mm film. The director Ti West is known for slow-paced films, another film that was released independently was The Innkeepers, which was released in 2011. Due to the financial success MPI MEDIA GROUP and also Dark Sky Films later distributed the film.
The film The House of the Devil was shot in 18 days. Most of the crew were locally sourced from Connecticut to keep the budget to a limit. Josh Brown, Derek Curl, Roger Kass and Peter Phok produced the following film. The director’s intention was to recreate the film into a 1980's splatter film. The United States premiere was at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival in New York on April 25, 2009. The film The House of the Devil won many awards after its release. It won multiple awards such as best actress and best musical score at the 2009 Screamfest Horror Film Festival. The film was also given a limited theatrical release on October 30, 2009.
The film The House of the Devil is an instant horror film classic. The film is a definition of what all 1980's horror remakes should truly represent. I believe it's about time Hollywood learns a thing or two about Ti West. If you're expecting a film that's full of suspense then you'll be satisfied. Throughout the film you are captivated by how much detail has been put in. It's an effective horror film that pays tribute to what originally 1980 horror films represented. Ti West has a talent when it comes to producing amazing horror films. The House of the Devil is truly the best film that was produced in 2009. Fans of the genre will be glued to screen all the way throughout the film. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ★★★★★/5 - TRENT BROWNING.
