The feature film 'Zombie Apocalypse' premiered on the 'Syfy Channel' on October 27th, 2011 as apart of the "31 Days of Halloween" programming special. 'Zombie Apocalypse' making its remark as a 'Syfy Original' film - it was produced by the independent film studio 'The Asylum' who are previously known for releasing films such as 'MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS' and recently 'SHARKNADO'. The film studio 'The Asylum' are mostly recognized for producing low budget 'knock-offs' from block-busters. For example; in 2007, The Asylum made their own version of the successful Paramount film 'TRANSFORMERS' into a film that can be expressed as a 'mock-buster'.
The film 'Zombie Apocalypse' firstly introduces to a scene with a few familiar faces. These actors include 'TARYN MANNING' and 'EDDIE STEEPLES' who is mostly recognised for playing a character named 'CRABMAN' in the hit television show that debuted in 2005 'MY NAME IS EARL'. A few moments later, these two characters seem to be stuck in a situation where 'zombies' invade the area. A group of survivors (VING RHAMES, JOHNNY PACAR, LESLEY-ANN BRANDT and GARY WEEKS) hurry into the cause and protect the three scavengers, but it was too late to save their friend 'Kevin Anderson' who had limited time on screen, his fate was left into the hands off Cassie; who has a resemblance of a familiar character to the audience 'MICHONNE' who is known to be a fan-favorite from the comic-book turned into an action series of the same name 'THE WALKING DEAD'.
The director 'Nick Lyon' who also established the semi-follow on from the instalment 'RISE OF THE ZOMBIES' that also premiered on the Syfy channel a year later from the release of 'ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE' did a rather exceptional job approaching his view on the film to make it into his own version. Even if the film 'RISE OF THE ZOMBIES' was a weak version compare to the film 'ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE', however the film does tend to get more into the dramatic tone rather than the action itself. The feature film 'Zombie Apocalypse' seemed rather predictable at times, but that's what made the film mostly likeable. Overall, the film did have minor flaws; the down-fall of the film had to be the special effects. For example; the blood-bursts were just not realistic and it got irritating at times, however it was rather impressive that the film was only produced less than a million dollars, you can't have every aspect perfected in this situation. I do give the production team credit for the damaged city landscapes and the constant smoke-effect in the background of a scene.
I do recommend for you to view this film; mainly for entertainment purposes. If you're a fan of the horror genre, this may be the right film for you.
Even if the film granted negative reviews from film critics, it still holds a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's a film to add to your collection for diversion functions. I simply give this film a thumbs up mainly because the fast pace action. It's rare for a creature film to be shot at fast paced and that's what it made the film entertaining overall. It's also surprising to see Ving Rhames onto the set once again - especially as a supporting character rather than a leading; even though he does stand out from the rest out of the crowd. 'Zombie Apocalypse' has minor flaws, but doesn't bother you to the extent to turn off the film. If you're a fan of the 'B MOVIE' genre, you won't be able to miss this film, especially if you're a fan of the independent film studio 'The Asylum' who have recently produced the successful film that premiered on the Syfy channel 'Sharknado'. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ★ ★ ★★ / 5 - TRENT BROWNING.
